Alpha Bank Cyprus made its first appearance in Cyprus in 1998 with the acquisition of Lombard Natwest Bank. It was renamed Alpha Bank Limited and later Alpha Bank Cyprus Ltd. Alpha Bank has grown considerably over the years and managed to establish its presence and claim the position of third largest bank in Cyprus. Bank of Cyprus is the leading financial services organisation in Cyprus, with operations in the United Kingdom, Australia, Romania, Ukraine and the Channel Islands. Emporiki Bank Cyprus was established in Cyprus under the trading name of COMMERCIAL BANK OF GREECE (CYPRUS) LTD in 1993 and operated with five Branches. Marfin Popular Bank, formerly Cyprus Popular Bank (a.k.a. Laiki Bank), is the second largest bank on the island of Cyprus behind the Bank of Cyprus. Its shares are listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange and the Athens Stock Exchange. In 2006 the Greek company Marfin Financial Group acquired the Cyprus Popular Bank (Laiki Bank), which it re-branded as Marfin Popular Bank.
